Folks, we're doing amazing things in GRuB School!

My journey with GRuB is quite unique; entering the youth program as a hopeless and severely depressed teenager, transforming to someone capable of being the Farm Manager, then growing into the role of Lead Teacher for GRuB School. I think it's a testament to how powerful the values and culture are that GRuB imparts on the community, and particularly each new cohort of similarly challenged youth.

As the person who manages GRuB School, I bring with me my penny-pinching tendencies, and I believe fully in every cent I spend. For one, youth in the summer earn a stipend for their hard work running the farm while learning valuable job skills. We also go on many field trips to support local hunger fighting efforts; weekly field trips to the Thurston County Food Bank in the winter to help them during busy times, and spring and summer trips to work in the food bank gardens. We also support similar youth programs at their farms throughout the year and bond as we work together to tend the land. We just did a unit around eating healthy on a budget, where students learned common tips in meal planning and had to decide on recipes based on a limited budget, bargain hunting, ample food for their group, and eating according to the colors of the rainbow to ensure balanced nutrients and vitamins. We took them to grocery stores to look at the ways to incorporate their budgeting lessons and then they bought the groceries for their group. We wrapped it up by cooking each recipe and sharing a group meal together before Thanksgiving break. 

I believe these aspects are worth investing in as they are all at once relevant, require strong relationships, gives them solid responsibility, and asks them to bring the rigor.
